How I got here
After finishing my master's degree in counseling psychology, I knew what I wanted to do with it. I wanted to be a hand held out to people struggling with addiction, because I know what it takes to reach for one.
I earned my chemical dependency license through the State of Texas in 2016 and have been working with people here in San Antonio ever since. A good deal of that work has been with individuals who came into the criminal justice system because of their addiction, helping them build something different so they would not end up back there.
That period changed how I practice. It is where I became drawn to restorative justice, and where I learned that most people are not waiting to be corrected. They are waiting for one person to listen without judgment.
How I work
I do not believe any two people are the same, and I do not think therapy should pretend otherwise. I am a person-centered counselor, which means we work out together what style of therapy actually suits you, rather than deciding it for you in advance.
What I have found most rewarding, over years of this, is watching someone realize they are genuinely able to become different from who they have been. That moment belongs to you, not to me.
It is time to build a brighter future.
What I do, and what I do not do. I provide chemical dependency counseling, assessment, and treatment recommendations within the scope of my license. I do not prescribe or manage medication, and I do not provide psychiatric evaluations. When something falls outside my scope, I will say so and help you find the right person for it.
Therapeutic modalities
These are the approaches I draw on. Which ones we use, and in what mix, is something we decide together.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Working with the connection between what you think and what you do, so that changing one can change the other.
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
- A form of cognitive behavioral therapy focused on psychological flexibility: staying present, and choosing actions that line up with your values even when the thoughts and feelings in the room are difficult.
- Brief Solution Focused Therapy
- A strengths-based approach that spends its time building solutions rather than examining problems. The focus stays on where you are now and what you are hoping for next.
- Eclectic practice
- Drawing on several orientations and techniques rather than one, and adapting to your particular situation, goals, and motivation. This is usually where person-centered work ends up.
The foundation of this practice
I dedicated Restorative Reflections to God before it had a single client. That is the ground it is built on, and it is why I keep sitting with wise counsel myself rather than trying to carry this alone.
What it means for you is simple. Faith is welcome in this room if you want it here, and it is never required. You will not be preached at, and you will not be turned away for believing something different or nothing at all.
With many counselors they are established and succeed.
